Renovation architecture

Across Auckland, we help homeowners reimagine the homes they have, from character villas to extensions and whole-home transformations, keeping what matters and changing what no longer works.

A good renovation changes how your home feels, not just how big it is.

Additional space can be important, but the quality of that space matters just as much. We consider how each part of the home contributes to the overall experience, from the way sunlight moves through a room to the transition between living spaces and the garden.

Villas and bungalows

Character homesSpecial character areas

Renovating a character home requires a careful balance between preservation and change. We consider the proportions, materials and architectural details that give the original building its identity, while adapting the home for contemporary living.

Extensions

Ground floor and upper levelOld and new as one house

A well-designed extension should feel like a natural evolution of the existing home. We consider how new spaces relate to the original building, the surrounding site and the way the home is experienced.

Whole-home renovations

Layout, light and structureRenovate or rebuild

A whole-home renovation gives us the opportunity to reconsider the layout, circulation, natural light and relationship between indoor and outdoor spaces, and whether renovating or rebuilding is the right approach.

Bathrooms and kitchens

Single roomsPart of the wider architecture

Kitchens and bathrooms are an important part of how a home functions. We approach them as part of the wider architecture, considering their proportions, natural light, materials and relationship to adjoining rooms.

How we approach renovation projects

Renovating an existing home requires judgement as much as creativity. Every property presents its own opportunities and constraints, and every design decision needs a clear purpose.

We start at your home, not at the drawing board. We walk through the property with you, study the site, its orientation and outlook, and understand how you use the spaces and what is no longer working.

Tell us about your home

Every renovation begins with understanding the home you have and what you would like it to become. You do not need to have a plan yet. Tell us a little about your home and what you are hoping to achieve, and Phil will be in touch to discuss the next steps.

“A lot of our philosophy is how you join space from inside to outside.”

Phil Smith, Founder and Design Principal

In a renovation, this approach can transform how a home relates to its surroundings. A new opening, a reconfigured living area or a carefully positioned extension can create a stronger connection between the interior, the landscape and the people who live there.

Renovation questions, answered

Renovation costs vary considerably depending on the size and condition of the existing home, the extent of structural changes, the materials selected and the complexity of the project. For Auckland homeowners, factors such as site access, special character requirements and the condition of older buildings can also influence the cost. We discuss your objectives and budget early in the design process, provide a written architectural fee proposal and review construction costs as the design develops.
