This contemporary home is perched on a steep hillside in Queenstown with sweeping views of Lake Wakatipu and the surrounding mountains. The design takes inspiration from the local environment, using natural materials that will age gracefully and blend in with the landscape. The house is anchored by two stone-clad volumes that house the private spaces, while the communal living areas are spread out in between, overlooking the view. The living areas are bathed in natural light, with floor-to-ceiling windows that open up to a large terrace for seamless indoor-outdoor living. The roof is designed as a green roof, planted with native tussock to help insulate the home and reduce its environmental impact. The timber structure is locally sourced and engineered to withstand the harsh alpine climate. The result is a home that is at once sustainable, beautiful and perfectly suited to its stunning natural surroundings.
