Our clients were seeking a sanctuary from their busy city lives, a place to escape, unwind and enjoy the stunning natural surroundings of Queenstown. They wanted a home that would be both a haven for relaxation and a hub for entertaining friends and family. The building site was carefully chosen for its exceptional views of the mountains and lake, as well as its proximity to outdoor recreational activities.

The design of the home was inspired by the rugged beauty of the landscape, with an emphasis on natural materials and a seamless integration with the environment. The exterior of the house features a charred timber finish, blending harmoniously with the surrounding forest and creating a sense of warmth and coziness. A stone wall snakes around the western lawn, providing a sense of permanence and shelter in an otherwise shifting landscape.

Inside, the home is designed to facilitate simple human rituals, with a carefully orchestrated sequence of spaces that allow for both privacy and social interaction. The bedroom wing, facing the land, is ensconced in stone, with low ceilings and tight apertures that create a sense of intimacy and seclusion. The living areas are situated in a north-facing glass pavilion, offering breathtaking views of the mountains and lake, and flooding the space with natural light.

Sustainability and well-being are central to the design of the home, with features such as natural ventilation, energy-efficient heating and cooling systems, and extensive use of low-energy LED lighting. The home also incorporates a range of eco-friendly materials, including recycled timber and native plantings that enhance biodiversity and connect the home to the surrounding environment.

Overall, this new house in Queenstown is a serene and welcoming retreat that celebrates the beauty of the natural world, while providing a comfortable and inviting space for relaxation, reflection and socializing with loved ones.
